Books to Help Children Deal with Loss

Many parents ask for books to help their children understand death. As difficult a topic as this is, there are books to assist with broaching this subject to help children cope with loss.

The Purple Balloon by Chris Raschka is a picture book for children as young as preschool that talks about the grieving process. This book uses minimal text and delicate illustrations of various balloons to depict the emotional experiences a child may have following the loss of a loved one.

Another title, Saying Good-bye to Uncle Joe, from Nancy Loewen details the process a family goes through following the news that someone has passed away. The book details the events that follow discovering someone has died from the perspective of a young boy to display the range of emotions children may experience throughout the mourning period.
