Celebrate Black History Month

There are lots of great books that celebrate historical African-American figures, as well as great picture books illustrated by African-American authors and illustrators. Here are a few of my favorites for both pre-school aged children that are just fun books to share with little ones and books for older kids that highlight an interesting African-American person from history.

Non-Historical Picture Books:

10 Black Dots by Donald Crews

“Dance With Me” by Charles R. Smith, Jr.

“Max Found Two Sticks” by Brian Pinkney

Historical Picture Books :

“Dave the Potter” by Laban Carrick Hill

“Jimi Sounds Like a Rainbow” by Gary Golio and illustrated by Javaka Steptoe

“Bad News for Outlaws” by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson

“We are the Ship” by Kadir Nelson

“Ella Fitzgerald” by Andrea Davis Pinkney

“Before John Was a Jazz Giant” by Carole Weatherford

“Henry’s Freedom Box” by Ellen Levine and illustrated by Kadir Nelson
